 If you haven't seen the recent improvements to the buildings and grounds at Squirrel Point Light, we invite you to visit! We're celebrating summer with a picnic Sunday, August 19th from 12-2 pm. BYO picnic, friends and family, and enjoy the grounds and activities.
We're also excited to participate in Maine Open Lighthouse Day, Saturday, September 8th, and are seeking volunteers throughout the day. If interested, please email [email protected]. Since 1898, Squirrel Point Light has stood as a beacon to marine traffic on the Kennebec River. After 120 years, the lighthouse and supporting structures are gaining a new lease on life, thanks to all of you who support Citizens for Squirrel Point. Maintaining access for the public to the lighthouse grounds remains an essential goal as we breathe continued life into the buildings. This year our focus is on completing work on the historic boathouse. Last fall, with your help we were able to replace the sills and beef up the framing, which returned it to its original shape. We replaced the roof shingles, and now it needs siding, flooring and a window rebuild to finish the job. For this essential and urgent work, we need to raise $15,000 before the fall. Because of the generosity of an anonymous donor, who has sweetly extended the deadline, gifts will be matched until August 31st.
