Join us this Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon as we prepare for special guests. One crew will tackle a little fall cleaning in the keeper's house, and another crew will trim the trail, clear debris and mow. FMI and RSVP to info @squirrelpoint.org so that we may plan ahead!
The grounds will be closed Saturday morning* Sept. 25 for a memorial service for the family of Stanley Reynolds, lightkeeper of Squirrel Point from 1950-1955. Thank you for respecting the wishes of the family as they celebrate in private the lives of their loved ones. We had wonderful visitors (and a few mosquitos) for this year's Maine Open Lighthouse Day! Friends from Chicago, Gloucester Mass, a couple on their honeymoon, a hiking toddler (with her parents!), a young man photographing lighthouses as a pandemic project, intrepid seniors, and neighbors from Georgetown and West Bath and elsewhere. The keeper’s house and boat house were open, Elisabeth made delicious cookies to share, Chris F. kept busy removing invasives and Ed began restoration of the boathouse railway! This critical project, when finished, will allow our work crew to access the property and deliver materials via the Kennebec rather than the mile-long trail from the end of Bald Head Road. We are grateful for all of our visitors Saturday who left a donation to help make this work possible. Keep in touch! * Previously in the afternoon; now morning. Dear Friends, During the early weeks and months of the pandemic, many of us rarely left home. Essential work, curbside pickup or a carefully planned walk outdoors became some of the highlights of our days. We found our way to wild spots along Maine's coast, including our own Squirrel Point Light. The lighthouse became a beacon in more ways than one, and you let us know with the photos and words that you shared: “This is our first visit and we’re definitely coming back.” “Thank you for maintaining a unique and beloved lighthouse.” “Such a place of tranquility in these confusing times.” And while we welcomed new visitors, it was a quiet year for restoration. We're eager to return to work on projects that were postponed out of safety concerns and material backlogs. Reconstruction of the railway to the boathouse is scheduled for 2021, as is work on the windows of the keeper's house. The long-awaited restoration of the light tower will follow. We invite you to make a year-end gift to the Citizens for Squirrel Point so that the important work to maintain, restore and provide public access to this historic maritime landmark may continue. Visit www.squirrelpoint.org to make an online donation, or mail your gift to PO Box 764, Arrowsic, ME 04530. If you've already given, we are grateful for your support. Be well, and visit soon! - Citizens for Squirrel Point Hi Friends, The boat shed at the lighthouse is freshly painted and we have been working hard to keep the grounds looking good too! We're hosting a volunteer work session this Sat. July 11 from 10 AM to 1 PM for up to ten people to help with grounds maintenance. To reserve your spot, please email Elisabeth by Fri., July 10.
